Custom Mosaic Floors
Bespoke mosaic floors — stone, glass and porcelain tesserae set to an approved drawing for premium Accra reception halls, hospitality lobbies and feature floors. Small-format setting to ANSI A108 over a flat, sound substrate, with ISO 13007 mortars and movement joints. Floor Experts Ghana, since 1978.
A custom mosaic floor is a bespoke surface composed from precisely cut tesserae — stone, glass and porcelain — set to an approved drawing, where small-format setting, substrate flatness and pattern layout decide whether the design lands true. It is specified for premium reception halls, hospitality lobbies, feature entrances and ceremonial floors where the ground plane must carry identity in its own right. Floor Experts Ghana has built custom mosaic floors across Greater Accra since 1978.
Why Mosaic Floors Fail in Ghana’s Conditions — and How We Prevent It
A mosaic rarely fails because the tesserae are wrong; it fails because the bed and the layout were. Small-format work is unforgiving: an out-of-flatness substrate telegraphs straight through the fine joints and reads as a rippled, uneven surface, while a rigidly bonded floor with no movement joints cracks as the building moves and the screed shrinks. In Ghana’s humidity, grout in a poorly-detailed mosaic also discolours and harbours mould where the wrong grout is used and porous tesserae are left unsealed.
We treat substrate flatness, full mortar coverage and pattern layout as the primary engineering controls. Mosaic is set full-coverage to the ANSI A108 method on an ISO 13007 polymer-modified mortar over a tightly levelled substrate, movement joints are detailed, and the layout is registered against centre-lines from the approved drawing. That discipline — not the tesserae alone — is what makes a custom mosaic read crisp and last in this climate.
Mosaic Systems & Materials We Install in Accra
Stone Tesserae Mosaic
Marble, travertine and granite tesserae for a natural, tonal mosaic — sealed after grouting where the stone is porous.
Glass & Vitreous Mosaic
Premium vitreous and fused glass for accent panels and feature fields, set on a white mortar so the colour reads true.
Porcelain Mosaic
Through-body porcelain tesserae for high-traffic and wet-area mosaics where density and low maintenance matter.
Bespoke Pattern, Border & Medallion Work
Custom patterns, borders, medallions and crests built to an approved scaled drawing and set out on site to register true.
The Mosaic Setting Standards We Work To
| Standard / control | What it governs | Why it decides the floor |
|---|---|---|
| ANSI A108 | Tile/mosaic installation method | Full-coverage setting and lippage control — small-format work shows every fault |
| ISO 13007 mortar | Adhesive classification | A polymer-modified (often white) mortar matched to glass, stone and porcelain tesserae |
| Substrate flatness | Bed tolerance | A tightly levelled bed so the fine surface does not ripple or telegraph |
| Pattern layout & centre-lines | Design register | The set-out that lands a bespoke pattern, border or medallion true on the floor |
| Movement joints | Stress relief | Relieves building and screed movement so the bonded mosaic does not crack |
How We Install a Custom Mosaic Floor
- Design, pattern layout & dry-set — confirm pattern, materials and grout lines; set out centre-lines on site.
- Substrate flatness & preparation — level to a tight tolerance; assess soundness and moisture.
- Setting to ANSI A108 — full-coverage on an ISO 13007 mortar, alignment checked against the drawing.
- Grouting, sealing & handover — grout to specification, seal porous tesserae, detail movement joints, QC under raking light.
Comparing Mosaic Materials for a Premium Floor
| Tesserae | Character | Maintenance | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stone (marble/travertine) | Natural, tonal | Seal after grouting | Reception, feature floors with a stone palette |
| Glass / vitreous | Vivid colour, reflective | Low; set on white mortar | Accent panels, feature fields |
| Porcelain | Dense, hard | Low; no sealing | High-traffic and wet-area mosaics |
| Mixed media | Bespoke, layered | Per material | Crests, medallions, signature commissions |
What Affects the Cost
- The design complexity — bespoke patterns, borders and medallions are labour-intensive set-out
- The tesserae materials (stone, glass, porcelain or mixed) and any sealing required
- Substrate preparation, flatness correction and movement-joint detailing
- Area (m²), access, and whether the space stays in use during works
Every quote follows a review of the drawing and a site survey — no fixed rate is given before the design and substrate are assessed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do mosaic floors crack or look uneven? Two causes. An out-of-flatness substrate telegraphs through small-format work and reads as uneven, and a rigid floor with no movement joints cracks as the building moves. We level the substrate to a tight tolerance, set full-coverage to ANSI A108 on an ISO 13007 mortar, and detail movement joints.
What materials can a custom mosaic use? Stone, glass and porcelain tesserae, alone or combined. Glass and pale stone are set on a white mortar so colour reads true; porous stone is sealed after grouting. The mix is chosen to the design, traffic and wet/dry use.
Can a mosaic follow a custom design or logo? Yes. It is built to an approved scaled drawing — pattern, border, medallion or crest — set out on site and registered against centre-lines so the design lands true.
How much does a custom mosaic floor cost? It is quoted on survey — cost varies with the design complexity, tesserae materials, area, substrate preparation, sealing and access. Request a site survey.
